Need an accommodation at work?

Last fall, Radio-Canada launched a new way to request an accommodation. The new rule aims to reduce arbitrariness and prevent your department from having to absorb the cost of accommodation when it exceeds $500.

So, whether you need an accommodation due to a medical condition, a disability, to care for a loved one, or for any other reason covered by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the first step is to discuss it with your manager, who can help you complete the new accommodation request form, available in Workday. This new process formalizes your request and ensures that the accommodation is maintained as long as you don’t modify it, even if you change managers or positions.

Two important things to note: First, your manager is not obligated to grant your accommodation request if they feel it is too difficult to accommodate you. They may also offer an alternative solution that isn’t exactly what you requested but still meets your needs. You can appeal the employer’s decision if you are not satisfied with it. Second, you can be accompanied through the process by your union representative. If needed, you can also contact Rakhee Chowdhury, the new workplace accommodation specialist hired by Radio-Canada, who can advise your manager on accommodation matters.

This new program is a Radio-Canada pilot project that has been supported and praised by your union representatives on the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee (EDI), where all unions have long been working to ensure our employer enters the modern era and does more to accommodate our members, in addition to promoting work-life balance.

Full details about the new process are available on IO under the headingResource/Life At Work/Rule on Accomodation. To access it, click here.

You can also ask your union representative questions or write to the STTRC to discuss your situation.
