New Cars, Outdated Maps
You may have noticed while using the built-in navigation system in the new vehicles of the CBC/Radio-Canada fleet that the maps provided are not up to date.
After checking with management, it turns out that they are indeed out of date and will not be updated either. According to management, this would be too complex a process. Most of the time, this isn’t a major problem, except when — as happens in large cities — local authorities change the direction of one-way streets, or when certain roads are closed for construction or because they aren’t maintained in the winter.
Therefore, as a safety measure and to avoid a collision with an oncoming semi-truck, the decision was made to instruct drivers not to use the navigation software that comes with the vehicle.
Instead, it is recommended to use the navigation app on your cell phone, which is updated in real time. The union has requested that the navigation software built into the vehicles be deactivated, but according to the vehicle manufacturer, this is not possible.
To promote the safe use of cell phones while driving, cell phone holders have begun to be installed in all vehicles. If your station does not have them, please contact your local health and safety committee, which can follow up with the person in charge of the fleet.
